Display & Classes Coordinator: Frauva Svana Másdóttir (she/her)

Greetings from the far northern reaches in Highland Foorde! The theme for Highland Havoc this year is the Winged Hussars and for our A&S displays at Highland Havoc 2024, we will showcase the arts of the horse! Do you have a favorite goofy horse from an illuminated manuscript? Reproduce it for us! Do you have a caparison, some barding or historical tack that you’ve been working on? We’d love to see it. Have you done research on the history of horse husbandry? We’d love to see it too! Do you have an equestrian related class that you’d like to teach? We’d love for you to teach it at Highland Havoc! Do you have a more general A&S project that you’d like to display? We can probably help with that too!

Display and teaching spaces are limited. Please submit requests to participate by October 26, 2024 using the Highland Havoc Volunteer Form.

“Justice by Blood and Iron – The History and Legal Process of Trial by Combat”

taught by Lord Alexander of Ayr:

For centuries various European societies resolved some of their greatest legal disputes through a procedure where two people tried to slaughter each other. This class aims to address a single question. Why? Why in the name of all that is just and at least slightly sensible would people, cultures, and entire kingdoms agree to this? In the process of answering this question we will look at the various techniques and legal practices that marked these trials, specific cases which were resolved by combat, and the lasting legacy of this practice on our own system of justice.

“Self Stuff Buttons”

taught by Lady Bertina Battista:

Class participants will use thread, fabric scraps, and a needle to create self stuffed buttons. Mix and match for your own clothing—  sets also make GREAT largess!

Lady Bertina will provide supplies for a limited number of people, or participants can bring their own to follow along as they like. Participants will need: Needle, Strong thread (Lady Bertina uses crochet cotton, size 10 usually) and fabric scraps (squares of 1 inch or more).

Lady Bertina will accept fabric cabbage scraps to supply future class sessions.
